THE LAND TRUSTS OF BRITISH COLUMBIA
A SURVEY OF LAND TRUSTS ACROSS BC INDICATE THAT THE PROVINCE’S 34 LAND TRUSTS HAVE CONTrUBUTED TO CONSERVING MORE THAN 1200 PROPERTIES TOTALING IN EXCESS OF 1.4 MILLION ACRES!
Land trusts in British Columbia own more than 700 properties and hold covenants on almost 500 more properties.
At present land trusts are working on 25 acquisition projects with another 24 covenants underway.
With annual operating revenues in excess of $12 million land trusts in BC also have endowment funds of more than $15 million. In 2013 50% of land trusts report stable funding with the other 50% reporting increased funding for the current year. Land trusts report that more than 70% of all funding comes from private donations with foundations as a secondary source.
More than 50% of land trusts in the province are volunteer run however land trusts employee more than 100 full-time and part-time staff with another 160 volunteers serving on Boards.
Each year 2200 volunteers across BC contribute more than 30,000 hours of service to land trusts.
Land trusts report more than 29000 donors and 11,000 members who contribute financially to support conservation efforts annually.
The Land Trust Alliance of British Columbia represents 34 land trusts in British Columbia and provides education, research, training, services, communications and advocacy on behalf of its members and related organizations.
